may 28, 522 BC - Darius I takes power
Description:
Persia divided lands it conquered into provinces so that the king's policies announced in the capital of Persepolis could be administered throughout the empire. Darius created a new position - SATRAP - a ruler of a province who was responsible to the emperor. He also instituted regular tax payments.
Darius allowed ethnic groups to retain their cultural identity and tolerated religious diversity as long as people paid their taxes and contributed soldiers to the military force.
