dec 17, 1953 - Presentation of Fijian mats and tapa cloths to Queen Elizabeth II

Description:

Occured in Fiji, Polynesia and it was a multimedia performance for the queen. The mats and tapa cloths were often presented as gifts in important celebrations. Made from plants and such, including barkcloth. They were presented to the queen during her tour of Commonwealth. The simpler the design, the more value it has. The barkcloths are called masi or tapa. When queen Salote died, queen Elizabeth arranged that she would fly back to tonga in a coffin with the barkcloth under her in order to honor Salote.
