FDR had little choice but to stand by and watch as Japan launched an all out invasion of China in 1937. Japan's presence in China became a serious point of contention between the U.S. and Japan leading up to Pearl Harbor. The sentiment in the U.S. was decidedly neutral and isolationist, but World War II in Asia was certainly underway. The Chinese for their part, temporarily stopped fighting each other (Mao vs. Chiang Kai Shek) in order to fight the invading Japanese.
