apr 10, 1920 - Final senate defeat of Versailles Treaty

Description:

Lodge was a Republican Senator from Massachusetts and was the chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Wilson angered the Senate, and Lodge especially, when he went to Paris himself and failed to include any republican senators on his delegation. Lodge struck back, leading a dozen or so senators with William Borah of Idaho and Hiram Johnson of California as Militant Isolationists. The irreconcilabes were the 39 isolationist senators who refused to sign the Treaty.
