aug 4, 1899 - Philippine Rebellion

Description:

The Philippine Independence movement (1899-1902), led by Emiliano Aguinaldo is little talked about but was more of a war than the Spanish American War. It lasted almost 3 years, involved the death of 4,200 American soldiers, 20,000 Filipino soldiers and as many as 200,000 Filipino civilians. Soon after it became apparent to Filipinos that the Americans had no intention of giving them Independence, the U.S. had a nasty war on their hands. American troops used torture and concentration camp tactics with civilians that became a shameful example of the dirty work of colonizing unwilling subjects. The U.S. paid $20 million to Spain for the Philippines, but spent $400 million to crush an independence movement. So much for McKinley's "benevolent assimilation."
