Description:

It pitted Democrat, William Jennings Bryan against incumbent Republican, William McKinley. McKinley was riding on a victory in war, acquisition of new territory, a new gold standard currency and general prosperity. Bryan clung to the old, but no longer so important issue of free silver and a new position as an anti-imperialist. Americans voted with their pocket books (don't fix what isn't broken).
