On September 6, 1901 in Buffalo, New York, President William McKinley was shot and killed by an assassin's bullet. He died on September 14th. The murderer was Leon Czolgosz, a deranged anarchist. Possibly the most significant result of the assassination was that it catapulted Theodore Roosevelt into the Presidency.
