apr 16, 1898 - Teller Amendment

Description:

At the outset of the Spanish American war the U.S. had proclaimed to the world (in Teller Amendment) its intention to liberate Cuba by overthrowing Spain. At the end of the same war, the U.S. employed its will in Cuba through the Platte Amendment 1901, which placed some limitations on Cuba's sovereignty. Limitations on Cuba included: not to enter treaty's that would impair Cuba's independence, not to incur debt beyond Cuba's resources, gave the U.S. rights to two important naval bases (Guantanamo is still in U.S. possession), and acknowledged the U.S. right to intervene militarily in order to protect Cuba.
