The development of a transportation network the spanned the United States (4 were completed between 1869-1884) was an incalculable stimulus to the U.S. economy. It stimulated mining and agriculture by providing access to new areas and transport of new products. It greatly stimulated U.S. steel production. It created the largest integrated national market area in the world. It was a big attraction to millions of immigrants. The environmental impact was generally negative and significant and finally, a new class of aristocratic millionaires was created.
