mar 2, 1867 - Reconstruction Act

Description:

Passed in Congress March 2, 1867, This legislation is referred to as Military Reconstruction because it divided the South into 5 Military Districts, each commanded by a Military General and Policed by Union Soldiers. In order for Confederate States to re-enter the union, they were required to ratify the 14th Amendment and guarantee black male suffrage in their state constitutions. This bill and the Republicans who wrote it came to be bitterly resented by the white population of the South.
