Description:

Created by Congress, March 3, 1865 is an example of Congressional republicans intentions to help freed slaves adjust to life after slavery. Initially, the government agency was set up to provide immediate relief to millions of freed men and women in the form of food, clothing and medical care. The greatest long lasting achievement of the bureau was teaching literacy to freed blacks and the formation of schools for the black population in the South.
