According to General William Tecumseh Sherman, "war is all hell." This was his justification for bringing complete and awful destruction to the civilians and private property of Georgia and South Carolina. He reasoned that it would speed the war's end to bring Total War to the civilians of the Confederacy by forcing them to experience directly the destructiveness of war.
