jul 18, 1863 - NYC Draft Riots

Description:

In July of 1863, Irish immigrants and New Yorkers attacked a building that housed the draft lottery. This led to one of the worst riots in the history of New York City. The violence was directed at government draft agencies and blacks. Over 100 people were killed, many blacks were lynched in public places of the city. The anti-black sentiment was widely held by Irish immigrants who resented being sent to fight to free blacks who would then take away their jobs. Federal troops were required to restore order to the city.
