Kennedy refers to it as the most fateful Presidential election in U.S. History. When you look at the map you can see how polarized and divided the nation had become. You can also infer that had the Democratic Party remained intact, Lincoln would still have won the Presidency. What is difficult to grasp is the Confederate secession as a response to someone as moderate as Abraham Lincoln.
