Description:

A series of 7 debates throughout the state of Illinois from Aug.-Oct. 1858 between the Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate. Lincoln, being the less experienced debater, challenged the Little Giant of a debater, Douglass. They are significant in that they highlighted two important candidates in the 1860 Presidential election and perhaps the most divisive issue in the nation, the extension of slavery into the territories.
