mar 17, 1857 - Dred Scott
v. Sandford
Description:
This Supreme Court case, a legal bombshell, burst onto the public in March of 1857. Justice Taney declared that black slaves were property and had no right to sue in Federal court. Further, the Missouri Compromise of 1820 is unconstitutional in that the 5th Amendment forbids Congress to deprive people of property in any territory without due process. "Blacks are so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect."
