For many years filmmakers had been adding color to their films. The did this by drawing on color frame by frame. But this took a long time and sometimes they just didn't do it as it required a lot of time and skill. However in 1935 a film was released called Becky Sharpe. This film used a technique called three strip color. This means that there are three strips black and white negatives. these negatives were then dyed and then brought together to create technicolor. The technicolor cameras were noisy so had to be put in casing called blimps. Theses cases were so huge that cinematographers had to find creative ways to use camera movement. These cameras were used right up until 1954 and made many iconic films.
