jan 1, 1889 - The first coin telephone was installed.
Inventor William Gray installed the first public coin telephone, aka the pay phone. Although his specific pay phone was just installed at his bank, he started the trend for these to built all over the country in years following. They were especially helpful at the time because people didn’t have cell phones yet so this gave people a way to call others when they weren’t at home. It also allowed people who didn’t have a telephone at all, to use one inexpensively.
