aug 27, 1962 - XXIV (24th) Amendment

Description:

On August 27th, 1962 the House passed the 24th amendment which abolished poll taxes as a restriction on African Americans in any state for voting. Poll taxes had been a method that 5 southern states (Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas) had been using since post Reconstruction era to limit the rights of African Americans and to disenfranchise them. The 24th amendment was a major piece in gaining more ground for the African American community to achieving equality.
