mar 3, 1845 - Annexation of Texas

Description:

The annexation of Texas was desired by most Texans and by many Americans. However, it would create an imbalance between slave and free states in the U.S. Senate. Many northerners were opposed to the territorial expansion of slavery. The territorial expansion of slavery (thus annexing Texas) was a major campaign issue in the Pres. Election of 1844. Polk's victory emboldened outgoing President Tyler to sign a joint resolution by Congress in Mar 1845, annexing Texas as the 21st State.
