jun 15, 1846 - Treaty of Oregon

Description:

The U.S. and Britain had agreed to joint occupation of the territory (10 years renewable) in an 1818 Treaty. A rush of pioneers trekked (Oregon Trail) across the continent in the early 1840's. Many were missionaries headed to the Willamette Valley to convert Indians to Christianity. The Oregon Territory figured prominently in the Manifest Destiny sentiment as the surest way to secure a U.S. Pacific Coastline. Many Americans wanted all of Oregon, thus, 54 40 or fight. By 1846, American settlers outnumbered British Settlers 5,000 to 700. This discrepancy is what convinced the British to come to agreement on the line of 49 N. latitude in an 1846 Treaty.
