A phrase coined by John L. O'Sullivan in an 1839 editorial, repeated countless times simply put: God is enabling the US to spread from coast to coast. O'Sullivan's editorial outlined the role the US was destined to play in N. America and in world history. That role was to be the bearer of democracy and a republican form of government, shining example of liberty, justice, technological progress and a Christian example to the world. Not too far off of John Winthrop's "City upon a hill, a model of Christian charity."
