jan 1, 1790 - Second Great
Awakening
Description:
Beginning in the 1790's, and continuing into the 1830's. Americans gathered in camp meetings to hear preachers deliver hell fire and brimstone messages of salvation by choosing to repent and turn to God. Perhaps the most successful revivalist was Charles G. Finney. The second great awakening was "A tidal wave of Protestant religious fervor, one of the most momentous episodes in the history of American religion." If Kennedy's description seems overblown, then consider that he goes on to assert that the social reform movements covered in chapter 15 stem in one way or another form this religious revival movement.
