mar 1, 1811 - Cumberland Road
construction begins
Description:
The Lancaster Turnpike was privately built as a business enterprise (toll road) beginning in the 1790's and spanned only 62 miles from Philadelphia to Lancaster PA. The Cumberland Road, later called the National Road, was initiated and funded by the Federal government in 1811. This project was much larger in scope and eventually will reach from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois. With the help of state $, the National road was completed in 1852. Both of these show the U.S. and State governments long range vision and commitment to connecting the continent with solid transportation links.
