The huge influx of immigrants in the 1840's received an unfriendly response from this group of Americans who held strong anti-foreign and anti-Catholic sentiments. The Nativists evolved into the American political party which agitated for rigid restrictions on immigration, strict naturalization laws and laws allowing for deportation of alien paupers. Essentially this group felt that the immigrant groups entering the U.S. were morally and racially inferior to native born Americans and their presence posed a real threat to the welfare of American Society. This anti-foreign sentiment has been a strong theme throughout U.S. history, having raised its ugly head once again in the aftermath of the September 11th 2001 attack on the
U.S.
