The Spanish conquistador, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, founded the first permanent European settlement in what is now the United States, and named it "San Agustín," for Saint Augustine of Hippo, on whose feast day (August 28) Menéndez's crew had first seen land while off the coast of Florida.
