may 4, 1804 - Lewis & Clark
begin expedition
Description:
Spring (1804-fall 1806) Kennedy does not devote much ink to these two men who made a perilous and legendary journey. Historians have not done a good job of representing the key role that many women have played in critical junctures. This Shoshoni Indian woman was truly critical in helping in Lewis and Clark to achieve their objectives. She carried, delivered and nursed a baby on this incredibly demanding journey. Her linguistic and geographic skills guided the men, who would literally have been lost without her. (Nothing new.) Starting from St. Louis, Missouri, where the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers meet, Lewis and Clark crossed the Rocky Mountains to the mouth of the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean. This expedition represents the spirit of adventure and discovery of the time period in American history and foreshadows the century that it begins. For her part, Sacajawea inspires the spirit of adventure even more than the 2 guys listed above.
