Incident
Description:
British ships were forcibly removing (kidnapping) American sailors from American ships and forcing them into employment on British vessels. 6,000 U.S. citizens were taken in this way between 1806-1811. The U.S. frigate Chesapeake, was attacked by a Royal British ship off the coast of VA in 1807. When the American captain refused to give up sailors, the British opened fire and took 4 sailors. The event stirred a nationalist rage in the U.S. at the time.
