mar 1, 1801 - T. Jefferson
becomes
president
Description:
Virginia planter and slave owner, he was born one of the wealthiest plantation owners in Virginia, but died deeply in debt. Author of the Declaration of Independence, served as US Ambassador to France during the Articles of Confederation government, Secretary of State in the G. Washington administration and VP to John Adams. As President, Jefferson strove to uphold principles of individual and states rights, limited central government. Jefferson's contradiction of owning slaves while identifying as a proponent of liberty was, he confessed; nothing less than hypocritical. While he was bad with financial matters, he more than made up for with brilliance in politics and insight into human nature.
