jan 8, 1815 - Battle of
New Orleans
Description:
This battle took place weeks after the Treaty of Ghent had been signed, making it a morale victory rather than a hugely strategic victory for the Americans. Andrew Jackson rose to hero status as a result of this battle. He had risen to Major General the previous year and organized a force of about 7,000 sailors, pirates, and militia. When the British regulars made a frontal attack on their position, they were able to shoot and kill large numbers, forcing a British retreat that was not soon forgotten.
