jul 22, 2021 - DeepMind Launches AlphaFold
Protein Structure Database
Description:
DeepMind and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) launch the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database, making over 350,000 predicted protein structure models freely and openly available to the scientific community, including predictions for all ~20,000 proteins expressed by the human genome. The release coincides with publication of the AlphaFold 2 paper in Nature, alongside open-source code, marking the culmination of work recognised the previous year as a solution to the 50-year-old grand challenge of protein structure prediction. Early partners are already applying AlphaFold to researching neglected diseases, studying antibiotic resistance, and developing enzymes capable of breaking down single-use plastics. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis describes the database as the most significant contribution AI has made to advancing scientific knowledge to date.
