The ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) names Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun recipients of the 2018 A.M. Turing Award, often referred to as the Nobel Prize of Computing, for conceptual and engineering breakthroughs that have made deep neural networks a critical component of computing. Though the use of artificial neural networks to simulate human intelligence had been introduced in the 1980s, by the early 2000s the three were among a small group who remained committed to the approach while the wider AI community remained skeptical. Their individual contributions span convolutional neural networks, improvements to backpropagation, probabilistic modeling of sequences, high-dimensional word embeddings, and attention mechanisms. The $1 million prize, supported by Google, is shared equally among the three, with formal presentation at the ACM annual awards banquet on June 15, 2019 in San Francisco.Added to timeline:
