jan 1, 1837 - Common Brush tail Possum
Description:
Common brushtail possums were first introduced to New Zealand from Australia in 1837 to establish a fur trade. While these early releases failed, settlers and Acclimatisation Societies made subsequent attempts, with the first successful breeding population establishing in 1858 in Riverton, Southland.
they severely damage the ecosystem by selectively over-browsing native forests, competing with native wildlife for food and habitat, and preying directly on native birds and insects.
