"Three Bell Gardens residents hunting for starfish on a Belmont Shore jetty Thursday afternoon [5/8/75] discovered a severed human head wedged between the rocks. [...] The head appeared to have been in the water for a long time, and was so badly decomposed the victim's sex and age couldn't be determined. After Marine Department Officer Dave Roberts recovered the head, police turned it over to the coroner's office for tests. The starfish hunters discovered the head at 5:30pm about 1,000 feet from shore, and called toward shore for help. Another man on the jetty then went to the parking lot at the foot of 72nd Place and hailed their patrol car, [Officers Dave Ryan and Chuck Higley] said" (LBI 5/9/75).
