jan 1, 1917 - Edmund Allenby (British)

Description:

General Edmund Allenby was the British commander who captured Jerusalem from the Ottoman Empire during World War I. His entry into Jerusalem in 1917 ended centuries of Ottoman rule and opened the way for the British Mandate period. For Jewish history, this was extremely important because the same year also saw the Balfour Declaration, in which Britain supported the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine. Allenby’s conquest therefore marks the transition from Ottoman rule to the political framework in which modern Zionism developed toward the creation of the State of Israel.
