jan 1, 1550 BC - Ahmose I (Egypt)
Description:
Ahmose I was the founder of Egypt’s 18th Dynasty and the pharaoh who completed the expulsion of the Hyksos, a West Semitic/Canaanite-related dynasty that had ruled parts of northern Egypt from their capital at Avaris in the eastern Nile Delta. Ahmose captured Avaris and pushed the Hyksos out of Egypt, then pursued them toward southern Canaan, especially the fortress of Sharuhen. His victory reunified Egypt and began the New Kingdom, the period when Egypt became a major imperial power over Canaan.
Ahmose is important for an Israel/Hebrew timeline because the Hyksos were Semitic-speaking or Canaanite-related people living in Egypt, and some theories connect the memory of Semitic groups in Egypt, their rise, conflict with Egypt, and later expulsion to the broader background behind the Exodus tradition. This does not mean the Hyksos were the Israelites, but their story shows that large Semitic populations in Egypt and movements between Egypt and Canaan were historically real.
