jan 1, 701 BC - Sennacherib (Assyria)

Description:

Assyrian king Sennacherib invaded Judah during the reign of King Hezekiah. He conquered many fortified cities, including Lachish, one of Judah’s most important cities after Jerusalem. The Bible says Jerusalem was threatened but not captured. Sennacherib’s own records claim he trapped Hezekiah in Jerusalem “like a bird in a cage,” but they do not claim Jerusalem was taken. This event is one of the strongest intersections between the Bible, Assyrian records, and archaeology.

The main evidence includes the Taylor Prism / Sennacherib Prism, which names Hezekiah of Judah and describes the Assyrian campaign; the Lachish reliefs from Sennacherib’s palace at Nineveh; and the destruction layer and Assyrian siege ramp at Tel Lachish. These strongly support the historical reality of the Assyrian invasion and the fall of Lachish.
