8 h, feb 24, 1979 y - Joseph Daly
Last seen alive
Description:
"Left his Milpitas home in the early morning hours of Feb. 24, 1979, and began hitchhiking the 450 miles to Portland, Ore. He had permission for the trip from his parents, and planned to watch the Feb. 26 eclipse of the sun, an event astronomers said could be seen best from the Portland area. Joseph did not see the eclipse. Less than 24 hours after his departure, two Mexican farm workers found his nude body alongside a road just outside Carlsbad, about 400 miles south of Milpitas. Joseph's death has been attributed to chloral hydrate (known as a 'Mickey Finn') and ethyl alcohol poisoning, which a coroner's spokesman said can be caused by excessive drinking" (SDUT 1/7/80).
"[...] He was 'a whimsical person and could have changed his mind about going to Oregon,' opting for Southern California instead. Jessie Daly says her son did not mention whether anyone was going with him to Oregon. 'When he did not come home the following Tuesday [2/27/79], we tried everything.' [...] His body was found at 7:47am Feb. 25 [1979] on Palomar Airport Road, just outside Carlsbad. [...] Joseph's body was identified in mid-October [1979]" (SDUT 1/7/80).
