Description:

"His still-warm body was found by a motorist on Irvine Center Drive east of Culver Drive at about 4 am Sunday [6/11/78]. It apparently was dumped from a car, police said. [...] Young had been arrested early Saturday morning in Santa Ana after spending the previous night bar-hopping with friends. He was booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of being drunk in public, and released without bail at 8:19 that evening" (OCR 6/13/78).

"On Saturday, June 10, [1978,] Young was released from jail. At 4 am the next morning he was found dead on Irvine Center Drive, stabbed four times in the heart and castrated. The guess is that Young was killed seven to eight hours after he was released from jail. 'We've never been able to close that gap,' [Investigator Dennis] McNeely [of the Irvine PD] said" (LAT "Four Deaths" 9/2/78 pt 2).

"At 8:21pm on June 10, 1978, Roland Gerald Young was released from the Orange County Jail. [...] He called his family to ask for a ride home, but was told that no one could come for him, so he started walking. Seven hours later, at 3:20am, Irvine City police were called to an on-ramp to Interstate 5, a 10-minute ride from the county jail, where they found Young's body. [...] A deputy Orange County coroner estimated that he had been dead less than 30 minutes" (SDUT 12/23/79).
