Description:

"Terry Lee Gambrel [...] is believed to have been strangled but the scene and the cause of death are still unknown. Gambrel's body was discovered by the California Highway Patrol about 1:15am Saturday [5/14/83] when a CHP officer stopped a car on Interstate 5 just north of Oso Parkway in the Mission Viejo area. [...] 'The investigating officer saw a passenger in the car who was either deceased or unconscious. The passenger (later identified as Gambrel) was taken to Mission Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead" (LAT 5/17/83).

"The photos [were] found in Randy Steven Kraft's car along with a dying passenger. [...] The passenger, El Toro Marine Terry Gambrel, 25, died at a Mission Viejo hospital May 14 [1983] after highway patrolmen stopped Kraft for erratic driving" (TDB 5/27/83).

Found in Kraft's car at time of arrest.
"On the night of May 13, 1983, [...] he would hitchhike [...]. It was sometime before 9pm. Four hours later [Kraft was pulled over on the highway]. [...] Within 15 minutes, firemen and a team of paramedics were on the scene. For the next half-hour, they performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and pumped drugs and other substances intravenously into Gambrel's body in a vain effort to revive his stilled heart. They rushed him to Mission Community Hospital [aka Providence Mission Community Hospital Mission Viejo]. When they arrived at 1:57am, a doctor pronounced him dead" (Last Ride, Ch.1).
