Description:

"Human remains [were] found by hikers last month in the San Pasqual Valley [...]. Michael [sic] Laine was reported missing in November 1982. "The body of a Modesto man who disappeared 15 months ago while hitchhiking to Southern California has been found in a remote area of San Diego County. Mikeal Laine [...] left Modesto in November 1982 and was never heard from again. [...] Laine's skull and jawbone were found by hunters in January [1984]. The cause of death is not known. [...] Members of Laine's family told The Bee that Laine was discharged from the Navy and he was going to Southern California to check on a job at a restaurant" (MB 3/2/84).

"[His] skeleton [was] found last month in the San Pasqual Valley. [...] Orange County sheriff's detectives had been looking for Michael [sic] Laine [...] since May 1983, when papers and a photo belonging to him were found at the home of Randy Steven Kraft of Long Beach. [...] Modesto sheriff's detectives, contacted after the papers were found, contacted Laine's mother, Juanita, who then reported her son missing, said Detective Michael Dulaney of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department. Mrs Laine told detectives her son, then 23, was discharged from the Navy in early 1983 and had been unemployed for several months. She last saw him in early spring before he hitchhiked to Bakersfield to check out a job possibility at a fast-food restaurant there. [...] Laine's remains were found by Escondido hikers Jan. 19 [1984] on a hillside near Highway 78 about five miles north of Ramona. [...] Detective Sidebothen said he could not speculate where Laine was killed or how his body came to be found in Escondido" (EDTA 3/2/84 pt 1).

"According to the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department, Mr Laine's body was found Feb. 28 [1984] in a remote area of San Diego County. His skull and jawbone were discovered by hunter Jan. 19 [1984]" (MB obit 3/7/84).
