Roland Young
Last seen alive
Description:
"Police were trying Monday [6/12/78] to retrace the last eight hours of the life of a young Maywood man whose body was found beside a road less than eight hours after his release from Orange County Jail. [...] Young had been arrested early Saturday morning in Santa Ana after spending the previous night bar-hopping with friends. He was booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of being drunk in public, and released without bail at 8:19 that evening" (OCR 6/13/78).
"Irvine police are interviewing everyone Young came in contact with following his arrest early Saturday morning [6/10/78] in Santa Ana for drunkenness" (OCR 6/14/78).
"Found sprawled face down on Irvine Center Drive at about 4 am, June 11, police said, only 7 1/2 hours after he was released from Orange County Jail. [...] Since the discovery Irvine police have questioned virtually everyone he knew, but have not found anyone who saw him after he left the Orange County Jail at 8:19 pm June 10. [...] police are running out of people to talk to and are now looking for anyone who may have seen Young in the last 7 1/2 hours of his life before he was found 12 miles from the jail door" (OCR 6/20/78).
"On Saturday, June 10, [1978,] Young was released from jail. At 4 am the next morning he was found dead on Irvine Center Drive, stabbed four times in the heart and castrated. The guess is that Young was killed seven to eight hours after he was released from jail. 'We've never been able to close that gap,' [Investigator Dennis] McNeely [of the Irvine PD] said.
Apparently, Young left the jail after calling Maywood and being told no one would make the long drive to pick him up.
McNeely said there are three theories as to what happened to Young after he left the jail. One is that he hitchhiked. But [McNeely] said no one stepped forward, even after publicity surrounding the case, to say that the man was seen on the highway.
Another [theory] was that he waited for someone he met in the jail. [McNeely] said that was almost impossible to check out because it would entail giving about 175 persons polygraph tests just to see whether they knew the man.
The final theory is that Young went to see people he knew in Orange County. But all of them, like the friend who went on that fateful binge, were at another party" (LAT "Four Deaths" 9/2/78 pt 2).
"At 8:21 pm on June 10, 1978, Roland Gerald Young [...] was released from the Orange County Jail where he had been taken on a charge of being drunk in a parked car. He called his family to ask for a ride home, but was told that no one could come for him, so he started walking. Seven hours later, at 3:20 am, Irvine City police were called to an on-ramp to Interstate 5, a 10-minute ride from the county jail, where they found Young's body. He had been stabbed three times and partially castrated. A deputy Orange County coroner estimated that he had been dead less than 30 minutes" (SDUT 12/23/79).
"June 11, 1978, found on Irvine City [sic] Drive less than seven hours after he was released from the Orange County Jail" (SDUT 12/23/79 Map).
