sep 29, 1974 - NAVY WHITE
James Cox
Last seen alive
Description:
"A week shy of his 18th birthday, Cox hitchhiked from San Diego to Long Beach to visit his mother. [...] They planned a birthday party for the following weekend and talked about his future as a Navy medic. She offered to drive her son back to San Diego, but he refused. Instead, his mom dropped him off near Interstate 5. [...] 'I stepped out of the car and helped him get his duffel bag out,' [his mother] said. 'We hugged each other and I said 'I'll see you next weekend.''
When Cox didn't show up at the Naval School of Health Sciences in San Diego on Sept. 30, 1974, he was listed as missing. A month later, the Navy declared him a deserter and issued a federal arrest warrant. About the same time, two children found a skull, ribs, skin, and other human remains off La Gracia in Rancho Santa Fe. Sheriff's deputies searched the area the next day and found more bones about 100 yards away. [...] John Doe No. 146 was buried [...] on Dec. 2, 1974" (SDUT 8/14/05).
