May 25, 1787-Sept 17, 1787. 55 delegates from 12 states, 19 of whom were slave owners, met in Philadelphia for 17 weeks for the "express purpose of revising" the Articles of Confederation. Rhode Island was absent. Amazingly they set aside their differences, endured one another for 17 weeks, made several critical compromises and managed to create the United States of America.Added to timeline:
