oct 22, 1784 - Treaty of
Fort Stanwix
Description:
This is the first treaty of the newborn United States with a Native American people. Pro British Iroquois (Iroquois had split loyalties during the War for Independence) who had claims to the Ohio country (term for land near the forks of the Ohio and down into the Ohio River Valley) were forced to cede much of their land to the United States. By making a treaty with Native Americans, the U.S. set an important precedent: Native American tribes are sovereign states under the jurisdiction of the U.S. national government only.
