[what] Khrushchev, confident from Sputnik, tries to claim all of Germany (orders west to pull troops out of West Berlin within 6 months)
[US response] US stood ground, tried to defuse crisis by inviting Khrushchev to Camp David retreat 1959, met again in Paris 1960 (not effective- see U2 incident)
