14 year old Emmett Till was murdered in August of 1955 for “flirting” with a white woman in a store. He died drowning in the Tallahatchie River. Till’s mom requested his body be shown in the casket to represent the awful injustice that African Americans were facing. This action by his mother brought nationwide attention and increased the support during the civil rights movement for justice and equality.Added to timeline:
