Description:

The Lieber Code was issued on April 24th, 1863, by Abraham Lincoln, and established the code of conduct of the military. No new technology was used. The outcome of the Lieber Code was a standardized military conduct and established baselines for the prosecution of war crimes. This event impacted the outcome of the civil war as it justified the destruction of civilian property and infrastructure, and laid the groundwork for Sherman’s March to the Sea. The Lieber Code’s importance comes from the fact it established baseline standards and the foundational blueprint for laws during wars which led to the Geneva Convention and military ethics today.
