apr 14, 1865 - Assassination of Lincoln
Description:
In April of 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, a southern sympathizer, in Ford’s Theater. Wilkes used a small and compact gun to assassinate Lincoln, a relatively new piece of technology at the time, and the new telegraph helped spread the news of Lincoln’s assassination quickly. The outcome of this event was a shocked and deeply saddened nation. The Civil War had ended before Lincoln’s assassination, but the assassination impacted Reconstruction as many people wanted a harsher punishment towards the South due to Lincoln’s death. This event was important as it traumatized and shocked a nation that was still somewhat divided, as well as it being the first time in US history of a presidential assassination that would lead to future improvements to protect the president.
