The Battle of Antietam took place on September 17th, 1862 in Maryland, and the battle resulted from the Confederate invasion of the North. New technology included “Wig-wag” signalling, used flags and torches that allowed for communication on the battle field. After the battle, new photography technology allowed for photographs of the battlefield and allowed people to see the horrors of war. The outcome of the battle was a Union victory and an end fo the Confederate invasion of the North. This event impacted the outcome of the war as it turned the tide of battle and gave the Union momentum and hope to actually win the war. This battle was important as it was a major victory for the Union, and it gave Lincoln the confidence to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which would completely redefine the meaning of the Civil War.
